LSAT Preparation: self studying vs. classes?
Friends who have taken the LSAT have all suggested to me that I take the class...But I was wondering if a combination of studying various things at home by myself might be just as effective. I purchased a Kaplan LSAT Book with online tests and the LSAC book of practice tests. Those who have taken it (or know someone who has) do you think the classes are worth the big bucks? How much of a difference will it make?
What were your scores? (just curious)
The answer depends on where you are scoring. If you are scoring well--mid 160s or so--then you could consider studying on your own. If you are scoring lower, a prep course would probably be the way to go. First thing you should do is take one of the LSAC tests you bought under timed conditions to see how well you fare. Depending on how well you do, consider the following:
1. Self studying
If you go this route, I'd recommend that you buy more actual Preptests from LSAC. The more tests you can do, the better off you will be on test day. Also, consider buying additional study guides. The Powerscore Bibles are quite well regarded, and maybe Kaplan's 180 book.
2. Prep Class
These classes can be worth it because even a small increase in score can get you into a better school (1). The main benefits of a class are that:
A. They lay out the strategies for you so you don't have to figure them out on your own. You also have a source to go to when you have questions or need help.
B. They provide plenty of study material, and that material is directed in a particular way.
C. They structure your preparation in a way that self-studying cannot.
The best known classes are probably Kaplan (2), Princeton Review (3), and Powerscore (4).
Do the classes help? Like a lot of things, part of it hinges on whether you put the time in. I did, and I ended up scoring in the 170s. I do know that I worked pretty hard, though. I also feel that I would have spent a lot more time trying to self-study because the course organized things in a way that made sense. Had I been studying on my own, it would have taken longer to arrive at some of the insights I needed to do well. Overall, I felt that the cost was worth it, especially when you realize how much law school costs!
