Improve Speed on the LSAT Test
What NOT to do
Don't rush. Telling yourself to go faster often results in rushing, which will likely result in your making a larger percentage of simple mistakes. As such, although you may attempt more questions, you'll likely correctly answer a lower percentage of those that you attempt, and thus may actually see a score decrease.
What to Do
Instead of simply pushing yourself to go faster, try the following suggestions.
Timing and Pacing
If you know in advance how many questions/passages that you'll attempt (pacing), how much time you'll spend on those (timing), and have criteria for which questions you'll skip, then you'll gain a greater control of time and can thus spend the necessary time to get a question correct (and avoid simple mistakes), rather than rushing to try to save a few seconds.
Focus
Zero in on the task at hand. Don't be thinking of what section might be next, how many questions you have left in the section that you're currently on, the tapping of the pencil of the person sitting next to you, the hum of the ventilation, or dozens of other things. Practice shutting out the rest of the world and envision yourself completely immersed within the passage, logic game, answer choices - nothing exists but the paper, words, your brain and pencil. When any thoughts outside, consciously and forcefully push them out. Instead of doing LSAT practice at home where the world and all its distractions are shut out, try practicing in a library setting that contains other people around you making shuffling noises, as this is what you will encounter on the actual LSAT, and will need to learn to shut out. Or, try doing LSAT practice in an environment that will likely be noisier than the testing place, such as a coffee shop; this will make the actual LSAT experience seem peaceful.
Form Answers in Advance
A common attempt to save time is to jump to the answer choices without thinking about what a correct question will do. Although you may start reading the choices more quickly, you will likely find two choices that seem right and thus spend unnecessary time trying to determine the difference between the two. Instead, anticipate what a correct choice will do before even looking at the answer choices. You might even want to physically cover up the answer choices with your hand to eliminate the temptation of looking at them. This forming of a correct choice beforehand will test your patience because it seems as though you're taking longer to get to the choices, and thus seems as though you are spending more time on the question. However, by anticipating a correct choice, you will find it much easier and quicker to eliminate incorrect choices and find the correct choice, and thus will likely spend less overall time on the question. (Note: This will not work for all questions, such as those with a question stem that simply asks for what must be/could be true/false with no other information.)
Do Logic Drills
Even if you understand the basics of logic well, you may not be able to quickly identify and work with the concepts commonly tested on the LSAT. For example, if you are competent, but not great, at working with conditional logic (e.g., you can usually identify a conditional statement, and once doing so, it takes you about 20 to 30 seconds to graph it and the contrapositive), then you will likely have problems with speed. You need to recognize and graph out a conditional statement and its contrapositive in about five to fifteen seconds. If you aren't performing that quickly, then try creating your own logic speed drills by writing out 100 each of easy, medium, and hard sentences. For example. suppose you have difficulties with "unless" statements. You could write out 100 easy, medium, and difficult "unless" statements, something like this:
Basic
X will not participate unless L also participates.
Medium
The hotel will not be cleaned on Monday unless the car wash is cleaned on Tuesday.
Difficult
The randomized experiment that Johnson and Field have suggested to the department head will not happen unless the funding for said experiment is approved through the president's office.
After writing out these statements, take a break of a day or two, then return and graph out all. After doing 300 "unless" sentences, you'll likely have it down and will speed through future "unless" statements on the LSAT.
