Legal Bookstore California
Legal stance as an employee in California?
I have had this job for about a month. I quit working at Starbucks, took a pay cut, lost my health benefits, and tuition reimbursement to work for this independent bookstore. There are two owners, one who is in charge of event planning, the other who handle the money. This morning I receive an e-mail, asking me to call the later of the two, ASAP. Well, It turn out that 100 dollars is missing from the change box. The opener discovered the shortage, and being one of two employees, I was blamed. I have several problems with this. One, being that I didn’t steal the money, the other reasons are that they have never change the locks on the doors, even though they have fired previous employees for theft, that there are no cameras or security devices of and sort, I have never had a problem with money missing before, and the only “proof” that I supposedly stole the money was that the other employee found the shortage. I might loose my job over this, and I want to know I stand legally.
Pretty much no where there is no proof in either direction. If I were you I would go back to starbucks this place doesn't sound like a place worth working at. If you do loose your job you will be able to collect unemployment. I bet the money turns up somewhere. Also I would bring it to the owners attention that the money was all there the last time you checked and the now convienantly the other girl found it missing. Good luck.
