Is it legal for an author to publish someones name without their consent?
I found out today that my father is in a book for a murder case he worked on but he didn't know that he was in it neither did our entire family. Can that author use his name without my father's consent?
Yes we're positive it is him. It explains the same things that he did and words he said.
If what happened in the book, as related, is from a court room, newspaper accounts or police records... those are all records that are in the public domain, unless the judge in that case sealed the records.
Records of that sort, those in public domain, can be used by anybody without permission.
If what was written (such as a home address, 'off the record' comments, etc.) are not in public domain, they cannot be used.
