Is it legal to copy pages from a book if there is a copyright on the book?
I have written a book in 2005. I own the copyright to the book and own the publishing company. Also, I am one of the authors. Now four years later during a child custody case, the wife of the Custodial parent has copied several pages out of my book and submitted these pages as "evidence" (not sure why) - maybe to show my morals as a parent? The book was an adult book which the child has no idea off and of course has never seen. My question is, is it legal for anyone to copy the pages of my book and submit them to my lawyer, their lawyer and the child's lawyer without my permission as a copyright holder?
Yes, it is perfectly legal to copy passages of a book and submit them as evidence in a court proceeding. That falls squarely in the fair use exception to copyright.
